The Giver

Question: Would you want your future to be decided by others ? Why or Why not


Answer:
 I don't want my future to be decided by others because of a few reasons.


The first reason is I want to be able to choose my life. This is because we are human beings and we were born free. I don't want to be bossed around by other people who does not know me well enough. They are not my parents or anything like that, so they should not interfere with other people's life. If they do than they are being a bad person. I am guessing nobody wants to be bossed around. Even if it is your parents, you still don't want them to choose your future. Other people are not perfect. If they decide your future and makes a mistake you will be more angry and sad, but if you decide your own future and make mistakes you won't be that mad. That was my first reason why I don't want my future is decided by others.


The second reason is because the other people might assign something that you will not want to do as a job everyday. If you are assigned a job that you wanted than you are lucky but if you get a job you did not want than it won't be fair. In the book Asher got a job that he will enjoy and he was happy about it but there was a girl who was assigned as a birth mother. This job has a very low honor and on the other hand Jonas gets to be the Receiver of memory which has the highest honor possible in the community. All I am saying is that you might be lucky and get a good job but sometimes you might get a horrible job that you don't want to do.


The third reason is because of love. In the society that Jonas lives in, they are not supposed to love anybody. In their community their families are assigned because the parents ask for an child so the community gives a child to them. The parents does not love the children. They are taking care of them because they have to or else they will be released. There is also the pills. The pills forget about weird dreams. The community does this so the people won't fall in love. When the kids are old enough they won't be able to choose their sole mate. In the community the marriages are assigned by the community leaders. The couples usually don't love each other. They are just together because the community said that they have to be together. In the book Jonas likes a girl but he can not be with her because the community decides your fate and I think that Jonas thinks it is not fair that the elders gets to choose. If I had to marry someone I did not like because of others choosing my future I will ask for a release. 

The final reason is because I don't want to obey to other people, especially if it has to do with my life. I don't mind people telling me to pass the ball or something but I do mind if they said something like "you will be doing coal works". That has crossed the limits. I don't want people to boss me around all the time because they will tell me to do something dirty for them. Sometimes when people get to decide other people's future they use this privilege in a bad way. They might order you to bomb some one's property or they might order you to do a job that you don't like such as finding coal, birth mother, or the releaser. My point here is that I don't want other people bossing me around because sometimes they make you do horrible things.
